Two Different Types of Lamination

In most instances, the use of lamination can eliminate mechanical fastening systems, (staples, nails or retaining clips) and the inherent problems associated with them.

For permanent applications, the 3M™ Heat Activated Tape System (HATS) is generally used.

The acrylic and rubber based PSA adhesives are normally used to hold the gasket in place before the gasket is more permanently attached by mechanical fasteners. Acrylic adhesives work best on painted or fiberglass surfaces, while the rubber-based adhesives work better on aluminum, bare metal and stainless steel.

Types of Adhesives
  • Heat-activated adhesive taping system (HATS)
  • Pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA)

Heat-activated adhesive taping system (HATS) & Pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA)

Many different HATS and PSA adhesives are available, allowing for the application of gaskets to a multitude of surfaces. Your Lauren specialist can help suggest the correct adhesive method for your specific application.

Is Taping Right for Your Sealing Application?

Adhesive attachment systems are a great alternative to screws, staples or metal attachment systems that can often ruin the aesthetic appeal of your application design. Our versatile adhesive systems are aesthetically pleasing, easy to install and cost competitive. Lauren’s adhesive offerings include double-coated paper, film and foam tapes, transfer tapes and heat-activated tapes.

Our Considerations for specifying an adhesive:

  • Is Taping Right for Your Sealing Application?
  • To what temperature range will this part be exposed?
  • Is it a static or dynamic application?
  • Is this used only in assembly or will the adhesive need to work for the life of the part?
  • To what chemicals/solvents will the part be exposed?
  • To what type of surface (substrate) will the adhesive be applied?
  • To how much surface area can the adhesive be applied?

For proper application and hold, the gasket bonding surface must be clean and free of any surface contaminants such as oils, greases, plasticizers, solvents, mold releases and dirt.
